Greg Norman - An oldie but a goodie

With Greg Norman in this week's Senior PGA, it makes me reminisce of the old days when The Shark was no. 1 and others lay in the proverbial water waiting for the attack of the Great White. At +5 and five shots out of the lead it seems as if the old man has lost his bite. If Vijay Singh can be in or near the top 10 in the world at 45 years old, how come Norman, a fellow world class golfer, at 53 seems worlds apart.

I guess it all comes down to time, desire, and practice. I'm sure with Norman's many businesses and ventures there is very little time to pay attention to the one thing that gave him his platform. While Vijah goes to the range day after day and pounds thousands of balls, Norman is in the boardroom day after day banking millions and millions of dollars.

It's great that Norman's been able to be so successful outside of golf, but a part of me wishes that we could see the The Shark step up and give us some of "that that" of the old days.

Tiger to Skip the Memorial - Again

Is this 2006 or 2008, because it's starting to feel like 2006 all over again. With the news that Tiger Woods will be out of the Memorial for the 2nd time in 3 years, it leaves me wondering whether or not we'll see a repeat of Tiger missing the cut in the U.S. Open like he did in '06.

Granted, it is a lot to ask of Superman to be back so soon from signifant knee surgery. But it's only so long that the likes of Mickelson, Adam Scott, and Sergio can carry us before our thirst is quenched for world class golf domination.

Come back Tiger come back!

Win At All Cost

Did anyone catch the Irish Open this past weekend? Probably not. Well, Kudos to Englishman Richard Finch for winning the open but not without a dramatic finish.

Standing over his third shot on no. 18, Finch, had an awkward lie on the side of a river bank. With a three shot lead the Englishman swung for the fences and ended up in the drink....literally. The momentum of his swing threw him into the River Maigue. To top it off his ball landed on the edge of the green! Talk about committing to the shot.

Check it out.

Tiger's Dominance

Sometimes I wonder if we can really appreciate how much better Tiger is compared to his wanna be contenders. This is a recent prime example of what I'm referring to. Check out the latest Fed Ex Cup Point Standings.

He has played in less than half of the events that the other 10 top players have played in. He is the only player in the top 50 that has as many cuts made as the events he's played in. And his lead in points over 2nd place is the same distance that 2nd is to the 40th place player. Simply Amazing!

Another Win for Tiger

Buick Invitational
Do we fully appreciate what we are seeing with Tiger Woods and his domination of the sport of golf? We all knew going into the weekend at this week's Buick Invitational that it was only a matter of time before he vaulted to the top of the leader board. The question that everyone should be asking is....will the golf gods be able to produce a rival to Tiger in the next few years or are we in for another decade of "Tiger Domination"? Even though the young guys (Charles Howell III, Brandt Snedeker, Bubba Watson, and Andrew Buckle) were in contention on Sunday, no one could step up to close the deal. Congratulations to Tiger on his 55th PGA Tour Victory!

Other golf news.....

Retief Goosen Back in the Winner's Circle
Retief Goosen eagled the 18th hole on Sunday to win the Qatar Masters. This victory gives Retief his 32nd career victory and his first win in over a year. Welcome back Goose!

2007 British Open to Ban Cell Phone Use
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club announced that they will be banning cell phones from the 2007 British Open. Apparently many complaints from players have caused the R & A to take action. I guess they are going to be searching everybody that comes in the gates. I still suspect that some will still get through with their phones. I've been to many PGA events and have always been able to get through with my cell even though they were forbidden. (Don't worry I was responsible. I kept it on vibrate and didn't take pictures with it).

Funk Obliterates the Field
Fred Funk shot an -8 on Sunday to win the Turtle Bay Championship by 11 strokes. Did anyone else know that Funk was even on the Champions Tour. Isn't this guy in contention on a regular basis on the PGA tour. Somebody check that man's birthday. Could he really be 50? I'm thinking that they should raise the age minimum to 55 for the "old dudes" tour. Can you imagine Tiger Woods playing on the Champions Tour at 50? He'll still be winning majors on the PGA.
